Literacy

At Southern Autistic School, we are passionate about delivering quality literacy education in accordance with the Victorian Curriculum for English. Our students work within the language modes of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing, and Writing. The modes are connected by strands of Language, Literature and Literacy, ensuring that knowledge is generalised across each mode.

In order to deliver the curriculum, SAS employs a combination of evidence-based programs and strategies. Letters and Sounds aims to build students’ speaking and listening skills and enhance their reading and writing abilities by developing their phonic knowledge. Handwriting Without Tears provides multisensory, developmentally appropriate instruction towards handwriting.

In our approach to literacy instruction, we endeavour to include a variety of one-on-one, small group and whole class learning experiences. Students build knowledge and skills through modelled, guided and independent tasks. We have a particular focus on providing deep learning activities that reach across the curriculum. Above all, Southern Autistic School is guided by the individual needs and strengths of our students.
