Food Technology

The STEM Cooking Program at Southern Autistic School gives students in Lower and Upper Primary School the opportunity to participate in weekly lessons, over one Semester. These lessons aim to engage and challenge each student to experience different foods, textures, temperatures, colours and cuisines.

Each fortnight students learn and practice a new recipe which is usually chosen by the students.  Some students choose to cook for their lucky teacher!

Students learn skills such as the safe use of a variety of both manual and electrical tools and equipment, and following procedures using recipe books and visuals, ensuring all students are actively involved in this process.

This engaging program encompasses Life Skills outcomes that will contribute to ongoing learning and independence in the kitchen. This includes topics such as setting the table, using cutlery, nutritional value of food and hygiene and safe practices in the kitchen.

Media

In Media Arts, students create visual representations that communicate, challenge and express their own and others’ ideas, as both artist and audience.

Students learn about the role of the artist and designer, their contribution to society, and the significance of the creative industries.

Art

The arts enable students to develop their creative and expressive capacities by learning about the different practices, disciplines and traditions that have shaped the expression of culture locally, nationally and globally.
